In this sea animals worksheet provided below, kids can read a passage about sea otters, answer reading comprehension questions and practice sight words.
Sea animals are playful animals. If we ever forget to play, we can look to them for inspiration. Perhaps these adorable and mysterious creatures appear so happy because they are experts at having fun. They like to slide down mud and snowbanks into the water, link arms with their friends and float, and toss around kelp, shells and rocks. It sounds like they turn their homes into playgrounds.
Sea otters are also adapted for cold water. Unlike seals, they don’t have blubber. Instead, sea otters stay warm with dense, thick hair. With up to 1,000,000 hairs per square inch, they have the thickest fur of any animal in the world. In contrast, a human head has 1,000 hairs per square inch.
While sea otters are playful, they are also shy. Unlike seals–who are known as the dogs of the sea–sea otters are a bit reclusive. They don’t like to be around people. Thus, they’re difficult to study. They’re kind of like the snow leopards or cats of the sea.
You can share fun facts with your students before they read the passage.
