If you’re working on letter tracing with your students, you know that handwriting takes time. Kids need to learn that letters have a correct direction, and how to write letters in contrast to one another–like how n is below the dotted line, while h is above. In this winter tracing packet offered below, kids can practice tracing letters.
Furthermore, learning to write takes many years, and even professional writers struggle to put words on the page. Ernest Hemmingway wrote, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” While that may seem excessive, writing is challenging. How can we expect first and second graders to come up with ideas and formulate them well independently?
Sometimes merely priming kids with words can help them get started. In this letter tracing packet, kids can trace words that remind them of winter before they answer the writing prompt, “My favorite thing about winter is…” Merely writing winter-themed words can help students brainstorm. In addition, many students are fearful of spelling. If students can copy at least some prewritten words, this may help them formulate sentences without fear.
