A beginner needs to learn the correct letter sounds. Since letters can say multiple sounds, this can be confusing. Many books and posters include letter sounds that educators should teach later on, not at the beginning. For example, a beginner isn’t ready to learn that “a” can say aw as in crawl, ai as in train, and ay as in bay. Instead, beginners should learn the short a sound a as in apple. This will help kids read short vowel words like hat, dad, mad, and wag. Teach the most important letter sounds first.
