It’s helpful to have a short vowel word list when you’re creating lessons for your beginning reader. I’m sharing a free printable cvc words list. Here it is:

CVC words list for kindergarten lessons
Do you ever get stuck when you’re creating a cvc lesson for your beginner? There are so many cvc words, and kids need to master these word types first. Yet, somehow, it’s easy to draw a blank when trying to think of them. That’s where this list comes in. You can print the list and have it on hand when you’re creating lessons.
You might need the CVC words list when you’re creating phonemic awareness, sounding out and spelling activities.
Beginners can read 6-20 words per lesson. Slowly incorporate more and more words as your student gets better.
A good beginner word list would only include short a words. For example, here’s a short a list:
- mat
- ham
- cap
- dad
- rat
- map
As kids become better readers, they can read 20 words in the sounding out activity. For a kindergartner who knows all 5 short vowels, here’s a good wordlist. The student can read each word sound-by-sound.
- gap
- him
- hen
- hop
- cup
- let
- Ben
- mad
- fit
- lot
- kit
- mop
- ten
- red
- jam
- pit
- yet
- get
- pup
- dot
You can also create spelling lists for kindergartners. A good spelling list for a beginner should have 5 CVC words, 1 sight word and 1 short sentence. Here’s a sample:
- cat
- net
- nap
- fun
- pup
- have
- They had fun in the sun.
Be sure to introduce the short vowels one at a time. Kids can learn them in the following order with our printable phonics books: short a, short i, short o, short u, short e. Short e can be challenging for dyslexic students. That’s why our stories introduce short e last.
I hope the CVC words list printable helps you create effective lessons.
