In this post, I’ll offer some FREE printable early reader books.
What are early reader books?
Early reader books are stories for kindergartners who know alphabet sounds. In a child’s first early reader book, kids read short vowel words. Short vowel words are also called cvc words or consonant-vowel-consonant words. Short vowels are:
- a_ as in apple (ex. hat, Sam, nap)
- e_ as in elephant (ex. hen, get, pet)
- i_ as in igloo (ex. hip, nip, him)
- o_ as in octopus (ex. hop, Tom, mop)
- u_ as in up (ex. cup, run, fun)
Thus, kids read short vowel sentences like: “Sam ran to the cat. The cat was big.” In early reader books, kids also read common sight words like: the, was, to, have, again.
Here’s a FREE printable early reader book, “Bill and Dan”:

The FREE printable story “Bill and Dan” is a decodable book that kids can read sound-by-sound. Since the child is a beginner, there are only a few words per page. As kids become better readers, they can read all short vowel word types and longer text.
Here’s a FREE printable early reader book, “Mex the Rex”:

In this excerpt from “Mex the Rex,” kids read a variety of short vowel sounds, including i_ as in big, a_ as in pal and e_ as in Rex.
Our step-by-step early reader books help kids master the most common phonics sounds.
After kids master cvc word types, they can learn consonant digraphs. Consonant digraphs are:
sh as in wish
th as in math
th as in then
ch as in chip
_tch as in match
_ck as in pack
_ng as in song
wh_ as in which
_ink as in pink
_ank as in sank
qu_ as in quick
Thus, at this point, kids can read sentences like, “Beth has a shop. At the shop, Beth sells shells.” Consonant digraphs are an important part of learning to read, and they’re often neglected in early reader books. For more on consonant digraphs, check out consonant digraph words.
Here’s a FREE early reader book, “A Wish”:

In “A Wish,” kids can practice short vowels or cvc word types and begin to read the /sh/ digraph. This slow, gradual introduction of phonics sounds allows kids to learn to read with confidence.
In the FREE early reading book “The Cat and the Color Bag” kids can practice cvc words and common sight words.
