What words should a beginning Kindergartner learn to read?
The free books in this post are designed for kids that can blend 3-letter short vowel words like: mat, mom, bug… (see short vowel word samples above).
Reading Elephant books are research-based. Therefore, they are not predictable or guessable. Students need to decode the words sound-by-sound. With phonics-based books, young kids can build decoding skills that will build a strong reading foundation.
The two free printable kindergarten level books in this post are designed for kids who are learning to read simple cvc words/sentences like: “Mom has a rug” or “Ben dug and dug.”

Struggling readers need systematic books that are not repetitive or guessable. Cognitive science research has shown that step-by-step phonics instruction is best.
