The Reading Elephant long vowel phonics series will come out soon. I’m very excited to release a sample igh phonics story. This time, there will be a fluency bundle in each set. Thus, kids can read 1-page phonics stories to develop fluency (reading speed). Click the following link for the free igh phonics book:

Teaching igh phonics
Kids learn long vowel phonics after they learn short vowels, consonant digraphs, consonant blends and silent e. Then, usually kids learn a series of long vowel sounds before igh. Even though “igh” is not in that many words, igh words tend to be in common words. For example, igh is in night, light, might—which are words we use all the time.
igh phonics for struggling readers
Reading Elephant phonics books are designed for struggling readers, including kids with dyslexia, memory-deficits, auditory-processing deficits and kids that simply need a methodical approach to learning to read.
In the igh phonics books, kids still get to practice old units, so they don’t forget or become weak in old phonics sounds. The review ensures retention. Also, struggling readers need a gentle approach. They need harder phrases woven into easier phrases. Thus, the igh phonics book includes some simple phrases to help kids develop confidence.
igh phonics words
Here’s a list of igh phonics words that you can use to design phonics activities:
light, night, might, right, flight, high, sigh, fright, sight
Creating igh phonics lessons
When you create igh phonics lessons, remember to weave in old material. If you simply have your student read light, night, might…etc. he’ll memorize the middle sound—he’ll know to say “igh” every time. When you teach “igh” be sure to weave in short i words. For example: wind, might, slid, fight. That way, your student must pause and think about whether he should use the long or short sound.
Long Vowel Phonics Series
The long vowel phonics series will include all of the long vowel sounds worth practicing. The series allows kids to review silent e. In addition, the long vowel series will help struggling readers master ee/ea, ai/_ay, oa/ow, igh and words with y at the end.
I’m proud to release a sample 1-page fluency igh phonics book in this post. I hope your student likes the story!
