Kindergarten sight word games are important for reading and spelling. Since sight words are common, teach them in Kindergarten. Start with a handful and slowly add more.
If you incorporate games into instruction, students can have fun learning their sight words. Usually, sight word instruction is one of the most tedious aspects of early reading skills. Students are often expected to memorize sight words with flashcards, because they’re simply is no other way to teach these words that break the phonetic code.
However, you can add some fun to your reading sessions. If you want to add a bit of color to your instruction, print out the attached free pdf called “Kindergarten Sight Word Sunflowers Free PDF.” It’s a sunflower field full of sight words. Let your student color in the sunflowers after she reads the words.
Read and Spell in Kindergarten Sight Word Games
Since sight words break the phonetic code, students need to memorize how to spell them too. Teach kids how to spell sight words early. Turn them into confident writers. If a child can’t spell, she can’t reread what she’s written, and thus, she can’t revise or edit!
Sight Word Sentences
Contextualize the sight words as she colors. After she reads and spells each word out-loud, have fun making up sentences. Kids like to invent sentences with sight words if they get to share their perspective.
Sight Word Conversations
Try to center conversations on fun places, delicious food, and hobbies. If the child has something to share on the topic, she’ll be a lot more willing to use the sight words in conversation.
“I would like to go to the beach. What would you like to do?” is a good conversation to have while teaching “would.”
“Have you tried chocolate chip cookies? What other kinds of cookies have you tried?” would work if you’re teaching “have.”
Sight Words and Animal Facts
Many kids like to learn about animals. You can use animal facts to teach sight words that might seem difficult to incorporate in impromptu conversation.
“Elephants have strong trunks. Their trunks can pick up a baby elephant.”
“Where do elephants live? Some live in Africa. Some live in Asia.”
